Legislation Introduced for Background Checks on Gun Purchases

Bill faces an unlikely future, though similar legislation has previously passed in the House.

Representatives Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Mike Thompson of California introduced legislation in the House this week that would federally require background checks for almost all gun purchases. “This bill is very straight-forward; it’s not complicated. And it just closes the loopholes,” Congressman Fitzpatrick stated at the Capitol that day. “Eighty-five percent of the public supports this, it should be easy.”

Similar bills passed the House twice in the last two Congresses, but filibusters in the Senate prevented the bill from passing in the upper chamber. Though requiring background checks for gun purchases is advocated for by many Americans, it is unlikely to get enough support in the House after the change in party control.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Representatives Fitzpatrick and Thompson as they address reform for fire arms.
  • For House Speaker McCarthy as he presents bills and acts for a floor vote.
  • For members of the House as they consider the gun restrictions and the Second Amendment.
